Salt pans, baobabs, and world-class wildlife
Overview
Begin on the edge of the Kalahari, where ancient baobab trees stand guard over the otherworldly Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Then head north into Moremi Game Reserve — one of Africa's finest wildlife sanctuaries — for three nights of exceptional game drives. This trip offers remarkable contrast: vast open sky one day, lush floodplain the next.
Day by day
KT meets you at Maun International Airport and transfers you to your first mobile camp on the Kalahari's edge. After settling in and refreshments, enjoy an afternoon game drive as the light turns golden. A freshly prepared dinner around the campfire follows.
Two days of twice-daily game drives across the dramatic landscapes of the Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan National Park. Walk among the famous Baines' Baobabs — some of the oldest living things in Africa — and scan the open salt flats for cheetah, springbok, oryx, and zebra. Evenings are spent around the fire under an impossibly wide sky.
A drive north brings you to the western edge of the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Your camp is set and waiting on arrival. An afternoon game drive introduces you to the extraordinary density of wildlife that Moremi is renowned for.
Two days of immersive game driving through floodplains, mopane woodland, and lagoon edges. Moremi is home to all of Botswana's iconic species — lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, giraffes, and hundreds of bird species. Morning and afternoon drives maximise your chances at every angle of light.
One last morning drive before breaking camp and transferring back to Maun Airport — or to a Maun guest house if you prefer an extra night of comfort before your flight home.
The landscape
At the edge of Botswana's Kalahari, two very different landscapes unfold beneath immense, cloud-filled skies.
Among the largest salt flats in the world, creating an otherworldly setting of shimmering white plains and endless open space. During the dry season the pans become stark and silent, with dramatic skies and wide-open views. After the rains, fresh grasses emerge — drawing zebra, wildebeest, and other wildlife in one of Africa's great seasonal movements. Visitors may also encounter meerkats and flamingos when water and grazing conditions are favourable.
A living mosaic of golden grasslands, mopane woodland, and seasonal waterholes shaded by ancient baobabs. Known for its large herds and excellent opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs — plus the famous Baines' Baobabs, unchanged since Thomas Baines painted them in 1862.
Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans are places of immense space, changing light, and unforgettable desert beauty — a quieter, more elemental side of Botswana.
