10-Night Delta, Khwai & Savuti

The complete Botswana wildlife experience

Overview

The journey

Three of Botswana's most spectacular safari areas in one journey. Begin in the Okavango Delta's broad floodplains, move to the wildlife-rich Khwai Community Concession — the only place you can do night drives in this region — then journey north to Savuti's famous predator country. This is the trip that leaves guests already planning their return.

Day by day

Your itinerary

Day 1Maun → Okavango Delta

Arrival & Delta Immersion Begins

KT collects you from Maun Airport and transfers you — by vehicle, or optionally by bush plane — to your first camp deep in the Okavango Delta. Settle in, enjoy a welcome drink, and take in your extraordinary surroundings before your first evening game drive.

Days 2–3Okavango Delta

Floodplains & Waterways

Two full days exploring the Delta's iconic landscape. Morning and afternoon game drives across floodplains where elephant herds wade, lions rest in riverine forest, and birds fill the sky at dusk. This is the Okavango at its most primal and beautiful.

Days 4–6Khwai Community Concession

Night Drives & Mokoro

Move to the Khwai Community Concession — a private reserve adjoining Moremi where exclusive night drives are permitted. After dark, spot leopard, hyena, and civets with a spotlight. During the day, glide silently through the channels by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) and track predators on game drives. A remarkable three nights.

Days 7–9Savuti, Chobe

Lion Country

Head north to Savuti, a channel known for its large lion prides and the dramatic predator-prey interactions that play out across its open marsh. Your camp sits in the heart of this extraordinary landscape. Three days of game drives offer some of the best big-cat sightings in Africa.

Day 10Savuti → Maun

Final Morning & Departure

One last sunrise game drive in Savuti before the journey back to Maun. Guests may swap this final night for accommodation in the Maun guest house at no additional cost, a comfortable option before an early departure flight.

The wilderness

Botswana's Water Wilderness

There are few places on earth quite like the Okavango Delta. Each year the Okavango River carries water from the highlands of Angola into the heart of northern Botswana, where it spreads across the Kalahari rather than flowing to the sea — creating a vast mosaic of clear channels, lagoons, floodplains, grasslands, and islands that changes with the seasons.

Botswana has deliberately pursued a low-volume, high-value approach to tourism. Rather than concentrating enormous numbers of visitors in a small number of wildlife areas, Botswana has protected large expanses of wilderness and limited development. You may spend hours watching a pride of lions without seeing another vehicle — or simply stop in the middle of the wilderness and hear nothing but birds, insects, and the distant sounds of animals. That sense of space is one of Botswana's greatest luxuries.

Moremi Game Reserve

At the southeastern edge of the Delta, Moremi combines permanent waterways and seasonal floodplains with open grasslands, woodland, and mopane forests. Elephants are common throughout, alongside buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest. It is also an excellent area for predators — lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, and spotted hyenas. One moment you are following a track through dry woodland; the next, you emerge onto a floodplain where elephants are wading through water. The constantly changing landscape is part of what makes exploring Moremi so rewarding.

Khwai — After Dark

North of Moremi, the Khwai River forms a natural boundary between protected wilderness areas. Khwai is particularly famous for its combination of abundant wildlife and beautiful waterways — and for night drives. After sunset the bush takes on an entirely different character. Nocturnal animals emerge, predators become active, and sounds carry through the darkness. A night drive can reveal a leopard moving silently along a track, a hyena calling in the distance, or an elephant herd appearing unexpectedly in the headlights.

The seasonal flood

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Okavango is that its seasons are almost the opposite of what you might expect. The annual flood generally arrives during Botswana's dry winter months — as channels fill, islands become surrounded by water, and wildlife gathers around newly available resources. As the flood recedes, animals move back toward permanent water and the landscape changes once again. No two visits are exactly alike.

The second wilderness

Savuti — Botswana at its Most Untamed

Savuti is one of Botswana's most legendary wildlife regions — a vast, remote wilderness of open grasslands, woodland, and dry river channels. It is wilder, more open, and often more dramatic than the waterways of the Delta. The two environments sit within a relatively small part of the country, yet the contrast is extraordinary.

The Savuti Channel

Perhaps the most fascinating feature of Savuti is its channel. For decades it was dry. Then in 2009, water began flowing again — transforming the landscape and bringing new life to an area known for its harsh, dry conditions. Elephants, buffalo, and antelope were drawn to the channel while predators followed their prey. It became an extraordinary example of how quickly Botswana's landscape can change. Water — or the absence of it — can reshape an entire ecosystem.

A Predator's Wilderness

Lions are particularly well known in Savuti — large prides hunting or resting in the shade during the heat of the day. Leopards, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs are also present. During the dry season, enormous elephant herds gather around available water, sometimes creating spectacular concentrations. Watching them move across the plains — dust rising around their feet, evening light stretching across the grassland — is one of the quintessential Botswana experiences.

There is no need to rush in Savuti. Some of the best safari moments come from simply stopping and watching. Savuti rewards patience — and that is precisely why we love exploring it as part of a mobile safari.
