The landscapes of Botswana

From delta to desert to thundering falls

Botswana is one of the most wildlife-rich countries on Earth, and our safaris take you through its most spectacular corners — from the flooded channels of the Okavango to the vast silence of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, and all the way to Victoria Falls on the Zambia border.

Okavango Delta

A UNESCO World Heritage wilderness

Each year the Okavango River carries water from the highlands of Angola into the heart of northern Botswana, where it spreads across the Kalahari rather than flowing to the sea. The result is one of Africa's great natural wonders — a vast mosaic of clear channels, lagoons, floodplains, grasslands, and islands that changes with the seasons. There are few places on earth quite like it.

  • Mokoro excursions through clear channels
  • Mobile camp moves with the wildlife
  • Seasonal flood transforms the landscape
  • No two visits are alike

Best time: May – October (dry season, peak flood)

Botswana

Khwai Community Concession

Where the bush takes on a different character after dark

North of Moremi, the Khwai River forms a natural boundary between protected wilderness areas. Khwai is particularly famous for its combination of abundant wildlife and beautiful waterways — elephants, hippos, buffalo, and numerous antelope species by day, and a completely different world after sunset. Night drives can reveal a leopard moving silently along a track, a hyena calling in the darkness, or an elephant herd appearing unexpectedly in the headlights.

  • Night game drives
  • African wild dogs
  • Abundant riverfront wildlife
  • Low tourist pressure

Best time: April – November

Botswana

Moremi Game Reserve

The heart of the Okavango

At the southeastern edge of the Delta, Moremi combines permanent waterways and seasonal floodplains with open grasslands, woodland, and mopane forests. Elephants are common, as are buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest. Moremi is also an excellent area for predators — lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, and spotted hyenas. One moment you may be following a track through dry woodland; the next, you emerge onto a floodplain where elephants wade through water.

  • Lion, leopard & wild dog
  • Vast elephant herds
  • Constantly changing landscape
  • World-class birding

Best time: May – October

Two male lions in Savuti, Chobe — prime lion country
Botswana

Savuti, Chobe

Botswana at its most untamed

One of Botswana's most legendary wildlife regions — vast, remote, and wilder than the waterways of the Okavango. The Savuti Channel was dry for decades before water returned in 2009, reshaping the entire ecosystem. Lions are particularly well known here, and the landscape rewards patience: an elephant herd crossing an open plain one moment, fresh lion tracks through the sand the next.

  • Large lion prides & predator drama
  • The legendary Savuti Channel
  • Elephant herds in the dry season
  • Big skies and open grasslands

Best time: May – October

Botswana

Chobe National Park

Wild, welcoming, and alive with elephants

One of northern Botswana's most remarkable wildlife destinations, renowned for its vast elephant herds and the life-giving Chobe River. The river draws elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, and zebra, while lions, leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas move through surrounding woodland and floodplains. Boat safaris bring you close to elephants swimming across the river — a place of abundance, movement, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

  • Vast elephant herds at the riverfront
  • Boat safaris on the Chobe River
  • Lion country in Savuti
  • Gateway to Victoria Falls

Best time: June – October (dry season concentrations)

Ancient baobab tree at golden hour in the Makgadikgadi Pans
Botswana

Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans

Immense space, changing light, and desert beauty

At the edge of Botswana's Kalahari, two very different landscapes unfold beneath immense, cloud-filled skies. Makgadikgadi Pans is a vast, stark expanse of salt and silence — one of the largest salt flats in the world. Nxai Pan National Park is a living mosaic of golden grasslands, mopane woodland, and seasonal waterholes shaded by ancient baobabs, known for large herds of elephants, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs.

  • Baines' Baobabs
  • Cheetah on open ground
  • Meerkats & flamingos
  • Vast salt flat skies

Best time: January – April (green season rains); May – October (dry season silence)

  • Table Mountain

Zambia / Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls

Mosi-oa-Tunya — The Smoke That Thunders

Where the Zambezi River plunges into a dramatic gorge, Victoria Falls is one of Africa's most spectacular natural wonders. The Zimbabwean side offers sweeping panoramic views across the main falls; the Zambian side puts you on lush rainforest paths within touching distance of the water. A dinner cruise on the Zambezi at sunset is a wonderful way to close a safari.

  • Main Falls panoramas from Zimbabwe
  • Livingstone Island & rainforest trails, Zambia
  • Zambezi sunset dinner cruise
  • Rainbows over the gorge

Best time: Year-round; February–May for maximum flow
